“Diminished chord” is three different chords wearing one word. A diminished triad, a diminished seventh, and a half-diminished (minor 7b5) are related but not interchangeable, and most confusion around them comes from treating them as one thing. This guide separates them, explains why the diminished seventh is built from a stack of identical intervals, and shows where each one actually does work in a progression.
Up front, the three chords and their formulas:
- Diminished triad: 1 b3 b5. Two minor thirds stacked (e.g. B–D–F).
- Diminished seventh (dim7): 1 b3 b5 bb7. Three minor thirds stacked (B–D–F–Ab). The bb7 is a diminished seventh interval: enharmonically a major sixth, but spelled as a lowered seventh.
- Half-diminished (m7b5): 1 b3 b5 b7. A diminished triad with a minor seventh on top (B–D–F–A). The “half” means only the seventh is un-diminished.
The diminished triad
Start with the plain triad. Stack two minor thirds and you get the diminished triad: root, minor third, diminished fifth. It’s the vii° chord of a major key: in C major, B–D–F, built on the leading tone. That tritone between B and F is unstable and wants to resolve, which is exactly why the leading-tone triad pulls so hard back to the tonic.
On its own the bare triad is comparatively rare in guitar comping; it usually shows up as the top three notes of a dominant chord (B–D–F is the 3rd–5th–b7 of G7) or as a passing chord. Recognising that a diminished triad is a rootless dominant fragment is the first useful shortcut.
The diminished seventh, and why it’s symmetric
Keep stacking minor thirds and you reach the diminished seventh: 1 b3 b5 bb7. Every interval in the stack is a minor third (three frets). That single fact is the most important thing about the chord, and it produces two consequences that are worth internalising.
First, the shape repeats every three frets. Because all four intervals are identical, moving any dim7 grip up or down three frets gives you the same chord with a different note on the bottom: an inversion. One shape, slid up the neck in three-fret jumps, covers the whole thing.
Second, there are really only three diminished seventh chords. B°7, D°7, F°7 and Ab°7 all contain the exact same four notes (B, D, F, Ab). They’re inversions of one chord. So the twelve possible dim7 roots collapse into three distinct note-sets, each shared by four names. Learn three shapes and you own every diminished seventh chord there is.

The three sets, in full
Because the twelve roots collapse into three note-sets, three pictures cover every diminished seventh chord in existence. Set 1 is above; here are the other two.
Set 2 - C Eb Gb A. Also called Eb°7, Gb°7 and A°7.
Set 3 - C# E G A# (that A# is usually written Bb). Also called E°7, G°7 and
Bb°7.
Put the three together and every note of the chromatic scale appears exactly once. That is the whole system: three sets, four names each, twelve roots, no remainder.
Half-diminished (m7b5)
Swap the bb7 for a plain b7 and the symmetry breaks: you get 1 b3 b5 b7, the half-diminished chord, more usefully written m7b5. It’s a functional chord, not merely a passing one, and it has two homes.
It is the ii of a minor key. In A minor the progression is Bm7b5 → E7 → Am: the minor ii-V-i. Any time you play over a minor ii-V, the ii chord is a m7b5.
It is also the vii of a major key, and this is where it comes from in the first place. Stack thirds on the seventh degree of C major and you get B D F A: Bm7b5, the only seventh chord in the major scale that isn’t major, minor or dominant. That is worth holding on to, because it explains the chord’s sound. The half-diminished chord is diatonic; the fully-diminished one is not. You have to raise a note to get a dim7, which is why dim7 always arrives as an outsider and m7b5 never does.

Slide the grip three frets and, unlike a dim7, you land on a different chord.
Because only the seventh differs from the fully-diminished chord, half-diminished does not repeat every three frets. It behaves like a normal seventh chord with four inversions and the usual drop-2 / drop-3 shapes across the string sets. Treat it as a member of the seventh-chord family (alongside maj7, m7, dom7), not as a variant of dim7.
Where each one is used
- Diminished triad: vii° in a major key; the top of a dominant chord; occasional passing harmony.
- Diminished seventh: the workhorse. Almost always a passing chord connecting two diatonic chords a whole step apart (e.g. C → C#°7 → Dm), or a dominant substitute: a dim7 a half step above a dominant’s root is that dominant’s rootless b9 (B°7 = G7b9 without the G). This is why dim7 sounds “dominant-ish”: it usually is a rootless dominant b9.
- Half-diminished (m7b5): the vii of a major key, the ii of a minor ii-V-i, and any spot calling for a minor-key predominant.
The two passing shapes worth naming
The textbook example is the ascending passing chord: C → C#°7 → Dm, a dim7 squeezed between two chords a whole step apart. Fine, but it is not the one you meet most often in standards.
That would be the auxiliary, or common-tone, diminished: C → C°7 → C. The dim7 is built on the same root as the chord it decorates, and three of its four notes are a half step away from a chord tone of C, so the whole thing leans outwards and falls back in. Nothing modulates; the harmony stays on C throughout. You hear it at the top of countless standards, and it is the sound people mean when they call a diminished chord “old-fashioned” or “ragtime”.
Its close relative is I → #I°7 → ii: C → C#°7 → Dm7, which is the ascending passing chord doing the same job on the way to the ii chord.
A rule of thumb that saves a lot of analysis: if the dim7’s root is a half step BELOW the next chord, it is a passing chord and you should hear it as that next chord’s dominant. If the dim7 sits on the SAME root as the chord around it, it is decoration, and nothing is going anywhere.
The dim7-as-rootless-7b9 trick
Worth isolating because it’s the single most useful practical application. Take G7b9: G–B–D–F–Ab. Drop the root and you’re left with B–D–F–Ab: a B°7 chord. So any diminished seventh grip functions as a rootless dominant 7b9 built on any of its four notes. That means one dim7 shape gives you four different dominant 7b9 sounds (over G7, Bb7, Db7, E7), just by imagining a different root under it. This is how jazz players get so much mileage out of a handful of dim7 shapes.
And here is the part that makes it playable rather than merely true. Each of those four readings wants to resolve down a fifth, so one grip has four destinations:

Four keys, a minor third apart, from a single shape you never move. Play the grip, then play each of the four target chords after it and listen to how the same four notes change meaning each time. That exercise is worth more than memorising the table.
How to practise diminished chords
- Learn one dim7 grip on the middle string set and slide it up in three-fret jumps until the symmetry is automatic.
- Memorise that there are only three dim7 chords. Pick a root and find which of the three note-sets it belongs to.
- Separately, learn one m7b5 shape and drill the minor ii-V-i (Bm7b5 → E7 → Am). Keep it mentally filed with the other seventh chords, not with dim7.
- Practise the 7b9 substitution: over any dominant, grab the dim7 a half step above its root.
FAQ
What’s the difference between a diminished chord and a diminished 7th? A diminished triad is three notes (1 b3 b5). A diminished seventh adds a fourth note, the bb7, making a four-note stack of minor thirds. Casually “diminished chord” often means the dim7, but they’re not identical.

Why does a diminished 7th chord sound like a dominant chord? Because it usually is one: a dim7 is the top four notes of a dominant 7b9 with the root removed. B°7 is G7b9 without the G.
