The Am Chord in the Open Position – Shape 1

This shape for the A minor chord is one of the chords from our list of the top-10 most useable guitar chords that every beginner should learn.

Symbol: Am

  • Index finger on C
    Place your index finger in the 1st postion of the b-string. Make sure to curve it enough for the e-string to able to sound clearly. Place the finger close to the fret.
  • Middle finger on E
    Place your middle finger in the 2nd position of the D-string.
  • Ring finger on A
    Place your ring finger in the second position of the G-string. Place the finger close to the fret and make sure to curve it enough as not to mute the b-string.
  • Do not play the low E-string
    The (low) E-string should not be played for this chord. Guitarists with large hands, playing on a steel-string acoustic or electric guitar may use a tight hand position and mute the E-string with the thumb.
